What can you tell me about
the statue near the first floor foyer in the library?
The statue is entitled
"Challenge, Achievement, Youth, Faith, and Victory over Fraility".
The sculpter, Carl
Farmer of Aurora, Colorado, constructed the statue from welding together many
pieces of rough cut steel.
The item depicts an
adult helping a young person up a mountain. The statue was dedicated as a
gift from the parents of Hunter Harris Durning in 1975 as a memorial to their
son Hunter. Hunter was raised in Longmont, earned his Ph.D. from CU, and spent
his short life working with the Justice Department.
Hunter died in February
1974 at the age of 33. The statue exemplifies young Mr. Durning's active spirit
as well as the philosophy of the library.
