NASA To Measure Air Quality in the Area

The City of Longmont is taking this opportunity to notify residents of an unusual event that will be taking place beginning July 16 and ending August 20, 2014 and being performed by NASA.

NASA will be measuring air quality from Castle Rock to Ft. Collins to distinguish between pollution high in the atmosphere and that near the surface where people live and breathe. NASA began a multi-year airborne field campaign in 2011 to begin this project. For more information visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/discover-aq/science/index.html

NASA will have a P-3 Orion and a C-130 Hercules (pictured below) based at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (Jeffco) that will be making numerous low passes over the City of Longmont several times a day at altitudes of 500 to 1,000 feet above ground level to sample air quality. Both of these aircraft are large and noisy and will be flying low over the City. NASA flights will start on the west side of town and transition to the east, back and forth to Ft. Collins. About every two hours, the aircraft will transition the airspace above Longmont. All flights are weather dependent.

The past three summers, NASA has completed projects in Baltimore, Houston and the San Joaquin Valley in California. The Denver Front Range is the next targeted area for NASA.

These aircraft are too heavy to utilize Longmont Airport and will be based at Rocky Mountain Metro. Additionally, they may add a 3rd aircraft as they most likely will be partnering with NCAR out of Boulder, which also has a C-130 based at Rocky Mountain Metro.
