Master Board of Appeals

The Master Board of Appeals consists of five (5) regular members and two (2) alternate members appointed to serve three (3) year terms.  Board members are architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers or master electricians, licensed building contractors, or persons qualified by training or experience to determine the suitability of alternative materials and methods of construction and to consider requests for interpretation of the City's building and other technical codes. 

The purpose of the Master Board of Appeals is to serve as a quasi-judicial appellate tribunal to determine and provide for interpretation and relief from perceived grievances from any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official of the City. The Board's primary functions and duties include:

• Sit as final administrative authority to hear and decide appeals resulting from any order, decision, or determination made by the Building Official or Fire Chief or authorized representatives made pursuant to any code set forth in Title 16 of the Longmont Municipal Code;
• Determine the suitability of alternate materials and methods or standards of construction substantially equivalent with code specifications, consistent with public health, safety and welfare;
• Grant variances from the strict application of the technical codes subject to certain standards;
• Interpret the provisions of Title 16 of the Longmont Municipal Code including building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, housing, and energy codes;
• Review and advise City Council on any proposed building and fire code adoptions and amendments; and
• Build community and expert opinions with respect to needed or proposed building code amendments.
