Education Task Force, Overview

Learn Today, Change Your World Tomorrow: Learning for a Challenging World

To carry forward the Focus on Longmont strategic direction to support education as a community-wide value, the Longmont City Council is mobilizing a community-wide effort to call the entire Longmont community to action to help make formal education relevant for all residents in Longmont. This most important initiative, “Learn Today, Change Your World Tomorrow”, will promote partnerships in all sectors to enhance educational opportunities from birth through college and retirement.

As we learned through Focus on Longmont, education serves a number of important roles in achieving the Longmont community's goals for a sustainable future, including:

  • Educational opportunities will help residents achieve their own employment and economic goals. No community can truly thrive if a portion of its members struggle to make ends meet.
  • A prosperous community offers abundant opportunities for people to acquire the education or training they need throughout their lives, in whatever way they learn best.
  • Residents must be able to find good jobs locally, and businesses cannot perform at a top level without well-trained employees.
  • An educated workforce will help the City attract employers with quality job opportunities.
  • Already a software and high tech storage hotbed, by offering a range of educational opportunities throughout our community, Longmont will continue to be an attractive and desirable place to locate.

A community task force made up of members from the Longmont City Council, St. Vrain Valley Board of Education and School District, St. Vrain Education Foundation, Front Range Community College, Regis University, Longmont Free University, Longmont Youth Council, SeniorNet, Workforce Boulder County, Multicultural Steering Committee, Intercambio de Comunidades, Magellan Center, Chamber of Commerce, as well as parents, educators and members of the business community hosted an Education Summit on Saturday, March 17, 2007 as critical first step to strengthen the entire community’s capacity to address key educational challenges that lie ahead.

If you would like to see the preliminary outcomes from the Education Summit, please visit our Outcomes Page. As additional steps are taken toward the education goals identified in the Focus on Longmont Strategic Plan, new pages will be added.
