LPC Joins Forces with Mayor's Book Club
APRIL 22, 2011 - In conjunction with National Electric Safety Month in May, Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) is sponsoring the May book for the Mayor’s Book Club. The Mayor’s Book Club sends free, bilingual books to 3 and 4 year olds each month who are book club members. Their participation builds their pre-literacy skills and increase school readiness.
For May, over 500 book club members will receive an English or a Spanish version of Electricity: Bulbs, Batteries and Sparks by Darlene Stille. This book teaches young children about electricity, how it works in our homes and communities, and features an additional section about electric safety.
Mayor Bryan Baum and Book Club Guest Reader, Marta Moreno of El Comité read Electricity: Bulbs, Batteries and Sparks to young readers from Rocky Mountain Elementary and Northridge Elementary Schools. The story time took place at local television Channel 8 (The Longmont Channel) studios and will air throughout the month. The show can also be viewed on The Longmont Channel’s website, www.longmontchannel.org beginning approximately May 1.
The Mayor’s Book Club was created in 2007 by the Bright EYES Initiative, a coalition of early learning experts, and is now housed within the Division of Children & Youth Resources of the City of Longmont.
Three and four year olds throughout Longmont can become a Mayor’s Book Club member and receive a bilingual book, an no cost to the participant, each month until they are five years old. To register, residents should visit www.ci.longmont.co.us and search for “Mayor’s Book Club.” Registration forms are also available at the OUR Center, Salud, Boulder County Public Health/WIC and the Longmont Public Library.
For more information about becoming a member or sponsoring a month of books, contact Linda Kopecky at linda.kopecky@ci.longmont.co.us or call 303-774-3762. Se habla español.
