See Winning Shock Art Entries at Museum
JUNE 17, 2011 - Art in Public Places Commission invited the community to express their opinions on selecting artwork and the people responded!
The Art in Public Places Commission of the City of Longmont recently invited local artists to submit designs for Shock Art 2011, a community art project that will see five electrical boxes around the City transformed into colorful and creative works of art. The 21 submissions were on display at the Muse Gallery and The Longmont Museum for nearly three weeks while the community was invited to cast their (five) votes for their favorites.
Between May 20 and June 12, nearly 700 people cast their votes to select the five boxes that will be painted during the month of July.
The five winning boxes will be on display at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road, through Thursday, June 23, when they will be returned to the artists for preparation for the scheduled July painting. Visitors can view the boxes (free) during open Museum hours (Monday through Saturday 9 to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 5 pm). Winners include Karen McKeans, Jason Kay, Leann Harding, Elise Ertel and Don Hollingshead. A special open house will be offered on July 16th to encourage citizens to visit with the artists as they paint and can “tour” the artwork on a set day.
Art in Public Places is funded by 1% levy on Capital Improvement Projects of more than $50,000 within the City of Longmont. For more information about Shock Art, contact Lauren Greenfield, Art in Public Places Administrator at 303-651-8924 or Lauren.greenfield@ci.longmont.co.us.
