Watering of City Parks to Begin Soon
APRIL 24, 2012 - Residents may notice that the grass in various parks appears to be stressed and in need of watering. The unusually warm weather has impacted the grass in the park system causing it to dry more quickly than in past years. The Parks staff is currently in the process of starting up the irrigation systems in the City’s parks. It is difficult to begin the start-up of irrigation systems earlier due to the risk of freezing and damaging the equipment.
The start-up of the irrigation systems is a time consuming effort. The system must first be charged with water and the then the sprinkler controls must be adjusted to ensure proper coverage of the turf by the sprinkler heads. This process must be repeated for every park.
The irrigation start-ups of the past two weeks has been at the athletic fields. Now that the parks with athletic fields have been completed, staff will begin work on the other parks throughout the city. This should be completed within the next two weeks.
The grass at the parks may appear stressed at this time, however, once watering of the parks begins the grass will recover quickly. If residents see a problem in the Longmont Parks they can call the Public Works & Natural Resources Call Center at 303-651-8416 to report the problem.
