Jackson Roberts and Council Member Gabe SantosAPRIL 15, 2013 - The City of Longmont’s first civic hackthon was a great success. Eight apps created over the two-and-a-half-day were awarded prizes. The top prize, awarded by major sponsor Western Digital, went to 14-year-old Jackson Roberts for his app that will aggregate event calendars from several local websites into a single Longmont event calendar. Other winning apps included one to notify residents by email when it’s their trash and recycling collection day and one to help firefighters locate all hydrants near the scene of a fire. Sponsored by the City of Longmont and tech giant Western Digital, the Hackathon was a weekend marathon event designed to bring together the community's best minds in an attempt to design and create software and apps that enhance City services. The City of Longmont provided open data sets to allow these young wizards to take a hack at software and app development.

Many suggestions and ideas were submitted by the Longmont community for apps that would improve their lives and enhance communication with Longmont local government.

The hackers took advantage of Longmont's fiber network, an ultra high-speed broadband system that gave these high-tech wiz kids the fastest possible connection to the internet available anywhere in Colorado and even the nation.

The City provided live streaming of the event and video highlights of the weekend's events can be found at
