Originally initiated in 1988, the Citizen Police Academy is a 36-hour program spread over twelve weeks, designed to promote and enhance citizen understanding and awareness of the role of the Longmont Police Department within our community. The Academy is offered twice yearly, once in the spring and again in the fall.
The objective of the course is not to prepare graduates to become police officers, but instead to instill in citizens a greater general knowledge of the many functions of the Longmont Police Department. The program has been created for citizens who are interested in taking a more active role in improving the quality of life in our community. The curriculum will include, but not be limited to, topics such as: introduction to the police department/current issues and a tour, K-9 demonstration, internal affairs, field operations, vice and narcotics, "Shoot, Don't Shoot," investigative process, crime scene processing, overview of the criminal justice system, defensive driving, CPR, and crime prevention. Class participants will also be required to complete a Ride-Along Program with a police officer in patrol for a minimum 6-hour segment.
Advance registration is required for the Academy, and it is open to any citizen who meets established criteria. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and must have no more than a minimal criminal history. The course is open
to persons of all walks of life, backgrounds, and occupations.
Citizens who have participated in the Academy report that their perspective of and appreciation for the Police Department have changed considerably and that they have gained greater understanding of the difficulty of a police officer's job.
