The Place, Recreation Services
After School Program at
Place is an after school program that is offered and organized by the City of Longmont, Recreation Services, for the students at Longs Peak Middle School and Sunset Middle School. Daily activities occur Monday - Friday and highlight a variety of programs designed to appeal to a wide range of students. Whether students are interested in attending only specific programs or are interested in being involved on a daily basis, The Place is THE Place to be!
mission of The Place is to provide a safe,
supervised environment for youth to achieve success through
participation in various quality activities that promote leadership, community
involvement, personal growth and Respect. The Place staff work with school teachers and administrators to help support the whole student in recreation and academics alike.
Typical day at The Place:
The Place will meet in the cafeteria directly after school where they will check in and then circle up for announcements and a group game. After 30 minutes of play, the group circles up again to divide into break-out groups. Break out groups will offer various activities, outlined on a monthly calendar available at school and at the top of this website.

||Students have 10 minutes to gather their belongings and join a supervised after school activity (like The Place, school clubs, or sports) or leave campus.
||Each student's name and check-in time is recorded on their pass. Students have the opportunity to call home, have a snack, check homework assignments, etc.
||Important information, schedules, announcements and instructions are discussed in opening and closing circles.
||Structured play for students to release some of their end of the school day energy.
||Break Out Groups
||Sports Club, Art Club, Study Club* and off-site field trips**
||Students award themselves and their peers participation points*** and check-out with staff (check out time is recorded on pass^)
||All students must leave campus when program ends. Please pick your students up promptly. Unsupervised students on school grounds are trespassing and may be ticketed by police.
* Every student is required to turn in regular progress reports. Students struggling academically or missing assignments, or who want extra homework time will break into Study Club after group game, where The Place staff will provide homework help and supervision. Study club will meet up to 3 times per week.
** Field trips may return as late as 6:00pm. All students leaving school with The Place will have the opportunity to call and notify a parent/guardian. Field trips include visiting Longmont Recreation/Culture facilities and Longmont/Boulder County open/green spaces.
*** Peer awarded points are determined daily, and monthly top point leaders are eligible for special field trip opportunities throughout the school year. Past top point leader trips have included laser tag,
^Student passes are issued daily. If your student comes to The Place, he/she will receive a pass when they check out. Their full name, check-in/check-out time will be recorded on the pass, which is signed by The Place staff.
There is no minimum participation requirement, and students are not required to stay until 5:30pm. We recognize family responsibilities, extra curricular participation and many other appointments/commitments take students' valuable after school time. Please communicate these commitments to The Place staff. Our goal is to make sure students have age-appropriate activities and supervision in those after school hours. To that end, we will record check-out time on student passes, whether they leave at 4:00pm or 5:30pm. If staff notices a pattern of early check-out (i.e. Sara leaves program right after group game 2-3 times a week), or students lingering on campus during program hours, we will make every effort to contact a parent/guardian to discuss the situation.
We hold a copy of each pass on-site. Please feel free to call The Place phone during program hours or email the program coordinators at their addresses at the top of this page. Please contact Karen Charles at (303) 651-8405 or e-mail with any other questions or concerns.
