Energy Star® for Homes Version 3
To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20–30% more efficient than standard homes. Version 3 takes the Energy Star program to a full implementation of systems thinking and applied building science. This course outlines the structure of Energy Star version 3, the building science fundamentals at its backbone, and the mandatory thermal envelope, water management, and HVAC aspects that are wrapped into its core.

Longmont Power & Communications

wants to let you know about a program designed to help homeowners increase comfort and save money on their monthly electric bill. The program, called EnergySmart, is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Department of Energy's Better Buildings program.

Homeowners who participate in EnergySmart begin with a technical home energy assessment to help pinpoint hidden leaks and energy wasters. And through March 31, Longmont customers pay only $50 (regular $120) for this service. The assessment provides immediate information about savings potential in a home and includes the installation of free, energy savings light bulbs, shower heads and water pipe insulation.

After the initial assessment, an energy advisor will help homeowners develop a plan to achieve their savings goals. They’ll also assist in finding a qualified contractor to do the work, review bids, and connect customers with eligible rebates and incentives that reduce project costs.

If you are interested in learning more about EnergySmart, or know of someone else who lives in Longmont and would benefit, call 303-544-1000 or visit www.energysmartyes.com On Friday of this week, February 3, 2012, City of Longmont Energy Services staff will also be available in person to answer questions in the Civic Center. They'll be located near the Utility Billing Department from 11am to 2pm. If you have a minute, stop by to talk with them and learn more about the program.
