Purchasing Preference Offered to Local Longmont Businesses

City to host informational meetings

NOVEMBER 5, 2009 - With the adoption of a local purchasing preference policy, the City of Longmont will offer local businesses a 5 to 7.5 percent advantage when bidding on City of Longmont contracted work and services.

The policy is designed to keep dollars spent by the City in the Longmont community.

“For the first time the City has stepped up to support our local businesses to be successful in bidding and doing work for the City of Longmont,” Mayor Roger Lange says. “The preference policy is a small incentive, but it is the right thing to do for our local businesses in Longmont.”

This preference policy also is City Council’s endorsement of the shop local campaign that is catching on in the community. “When you shop local businesses, you support Longmont families and support City services,” Lange says. “The City Council supports the shop local concept so we are putting our money where our mouth is.”

The City hires many different companies to perform work and provide needed products throughout Longmont. The work ranges from construction work like replacing water lines or paving streets to office work like auditing financial records to providing supplies to support the daily operation of the government.

How can businesses bid for government work? The City of Longmont is hosting an informational meeting designed to provide insights into the world of doing business with the city and to offer more insight into the local preference policy on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 3 p.m. and on Friday November 20 at 9 a.m. in the City Council chambers at the Longmont Civic Center, 350 Kimbark St.

"The meeting is best-suited for businesses interested in providing goods, services or construction to the City," says Danielle Hinz, purchasing and contracts manager for the City of Longmont.
