Public Opinion Sought on 2010 Longmont City Budget
JULY 15, 2009 - After several months of review and analysis, the Longmont Budget Office has created priority lists of city services for the Longmont City Council to examine and discuss as they begin deliberations on the City’s 2010 City Budget.
As part of the budget process, the Longmont community is invited to give their opinions, suggestions and ideas on the priority lists at the next City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Longmont Civic Center, 350 Kimbark St.
Two priority lists can be found on the City’s Web site at http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/finance/budget/index.htm. One list outlines external City services like public safety and recreation; the other list prioritizes internal services like computer support and accounting.
Following the public hearing, City Council is expected to give further direction on how to use the priority lists in preparation for making hard choices to balance the 2010 budget.
The list of city services reflects public feedback that was gathered earlier this year through a survey called Fiscal Fitness. The Fiscal Fitness process asked Longmont residents for feedback regarding the relative value of the direct City-wide results. The survey was distributed through Longmont Life, the City’s resident newsletter, the City’s Web site and at service counters in the various facilities of the City.
The City received 636 total responses to the survey. The following responses were used to weight the scores of each direct service and thereby help determine the overall service score and the relative priority order of the services. These responses do not equate to the percentage allocation of General Fund dollars, but to the residents’ priority in funding these areas:
23.0 Economic Health
16.4 Environmental Health
14.6 Neighborhood Quality
27.5 Community Safety
18.6 Cultural, Learning, Recreation and Human Service Opportunities
100.0 Total
This weighting along with other factors resulted in priority lists of direct and internal services for Council’s consideration when making tough budget choices for 2010.
