Newly Created Election Committee Needs Applicants
MARCH 13, 2009 - The City Clerk's Office is recruiting for members of the newly formed Election Committee. This committee consists of 7 regular members and 2 alternate members.
The role of the Election Committee is:
1) Advise City Clerk and City Council on election and campaign issues
2) Review campaign reports and alleged campaign violations
3) Recommend changes to the Fair Campaign Practices Act
In order to create a staggered expiration of terms, the recruitment will occur as follows:
Three (3) one-year Regular member terms expiring June 30, 2010
Two (2) two-year Regular member terms expiring June 30, 2011
One (1) two-year Alternate member term expiring June 30, 2011
Two (2) three-year Regular member terms expiring June 30, 2012
One (1) three-year Alternate member term expiring June 30, 2012
Applicants who have a preference for a particular term (one, two or three year) should simply write that preference in on their application in the section "How much time are you able to devote to fulfill the obligation of appointment?" as the current forms do not have a dedicated space for that. Their appointments will begin as soon as they are appointed and will expire as indicated above.
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on April 17, 2009. Applications are available at the City Clerk's Office or on the City's Web site www.ci.longmont.co.us/boards/application/index.htm.
The Election Committee was created at the recommendation of the City of Longmont Election Task Force in their 2008 findings report. The Task Force was created In March 2008, to review the Longmont Fair Campaign Practices Act (LFCPA) and bring back suggested changes to update and clarify the act, which was originally adopted in early 2000. As part of that effort, the Council expressed interest in establishing contribution limits for local campaigns.
The nine-member Task Force met twice a month from early May through July and weekly thereafter through November. A preliminary report was presented to Council in September. The final report from the Task Force was presented to Council in December 2008. The report contained 27 recommended changes to the LFCPA along with recommended sanctions for violations and new/amended definitions of terms used in the Act.
