Video About Longmont's Mosquito Control Program Posted to Web

JULY 8, 2009 - A new video that outlines the City's strategies for controlling the mosquito population in Longmont is now available on the City's Web site at http://65.49.32.143/maportal/public/longmontcommunity/webcast.aspx.

First developed in 2002, the Longmont's Integrated Pest Management Program is a strategic approach to controlling the mosquito population and decreasing the risk of spreading West Nile virus. There is a common mispreception in the community that the program revolves around the spraying of insecticides. In reality, the City spends most of it's resources on prevention efforts. The plan consists of five parts:

• Public education and outreach
• Site monitoring and surveillance
• Larvacide
• Adulticide – Site Specific Spot Spraying Program
• City-wide West Nile Vector emergency spraying

The 7-minute video was produced by Longmont's Channel 3.

The video also offers tips for reducing the risk of contracting West Nile virus -
