Railroad Crossing Repair Work to Close 17th Avenue

rail repair to close 17th Avenue for three daysSEPTEMBER 10, 2010 - The bumpy ride over the railroad tracks on 17th Avenue, just east of Meadow St., will be eliminated and replaced with a new, smoother riding concrete.

Beginning on Wednesday, September 22, 17th Avenue will be closed to thru traffic at the railroad crossing for three days. Full access to all businesses, schools and neighborhoods will be maintained during construction.

Road closures and detours begin on September 22 at 7 a.m. and will reopen late in the day on Friday, September 24. Detours will be in place during the duration of the project (see map). Motorists will have to go north to State Highway 66 or south to 9th Avenue to get around the project.

"The railroad crossing on 17th Avenue has severely deteriorated during the past few years and is significantly impacted the ride for many drivers," said Richard White, City of Longmont Project Manager. "When the old rubber panel system along the tracks is replaced with a new concrete panel system, the ride will be much smoother."

The City of Longmont is partnering with the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad to complete this repair.

For more information about this project, call Richard White, project manager at 303-651-8567 or Bill McNeal, project inspector at 303-651-8317.
