Longmont and Firestone Settle Annexation Dispute in Weld County

JUNE 14, 2010 - Longmont, Firestone, and private property owners have settled a series of lawsuits involving annexations in southwest Weld County.  On Monday, June 14th, those parties filed joint motions with the Colorado Court of Appeals and Weld County District Court requesting dismissal of the lawsuits.  As a result of the settlement, the Union mixed use development project, annexed to Firestone, will be able to move forward.  Longmont will continue annexation of its open space around Union Reservoir and will also be able to continue annexing city-owned open space along the St. Vrain River to provide a community buffer and protect sensitive ecological areas.

Firestone Mayor Chad Auer noted “This is good news for both communities!  We now have final resolution of this matter that preserves the rights of land owners, accomplishes a cooperative arrangement between our communities and preserves further expenditure of tax payer’s dollars.  This settlement agreement provides Firestone and Longmont with predictable boundaries in southwest Weld County and an opportunity to cooperate on intergovernmental matters to the benefit of both communities.”  Longmont Mayor Bryan Baum commented “Settling on-going lawsuits was a goal of this elected City Council and with this agreement, we have accomplished that goal.  In addition, we look forward to building strong relationships with our neighbors to the east for the benefit of everyone.  Longmont became a stronger city today.  In the spirit of cooperation, we’re putting this behind us and looking toward the future.  Longmont can now move forward with important projects in Weld County on property owned by the City of Longmont including the annexation of open space along the St Vrain River corridor, trail connections and other projects that will serve Longmont.”
