Celebrate the Opening of New Trail at Golden Ponds
First 50 kids in attendance receive reindeer antlers
DECEMBER 16, 2010 - The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new trail that runs between Golden Ponds and Airport Road on Tuesday, December 21 at 2 pm.
Longmont Mayor Bryan L. Baum and his fellow City Council Members will cut the garland - instead of the traditional ribbon - which will officially open the new trail. The public ceremony will be held at the new picnic shelter south of the St. Vrain Bridge or about an 8-minute walk from the Golden Ponds parking lot at the end of 3rd Avenue (see map). The first 50 kids will receive free reindeer antlers to wear during the holidays. Eveyone is encouraged to dress warmly and refreshments will be served.
The ceremony also will signify the near completion of the Lykins Gulch drainage project.
"This project adds both function and beauty to this stretch of the city," Mayor Baum said. "By improving the Lykins Gulch floodplain we not only improve public safety, we get the added benefit of a new and improved trail for the public to enjoy."
Construction on the approximately $3.5 million Lykins Gulch drainage project began in early 2010 to lift a significant area of land between Airport Road and Hover Street from the 100-year fllodplain, an obvious benefit to public safety. Efforts also have focused on restoring much of the Lykins Gulch stream to its natural flow and drainage patterns beautifying the surrounding land with native wildlife and fish.
The project is expected to cost $3.5 million with $3.1 million being financed by 2008 bond proceeds and the rest from the City's Public Improvement Fund. Voters approved the project in the 2007 election.
