March 11, 2011 - 4 pm, The Longmont Dam Roadway Fire is 100 percent contained. Fire personnel are continuing to monitor the area and it is expected that fire operations will be wrapped up by late tonight or early Saturday morning.
MARCH 11, 2011 - Approximately 1.2 acres have burned in a fire near Longmont Dam Road, north of Button Rock Reservoir in Boulder County. There are about 50 firefighters from 8 agencies currently fighting the fire.
Consistent with the City’s Button Rock Forest Stewardship program, the City of Longmont has been conducting prescribed controlled burns of small slash piles in the area this past week. The burns were being monitored 24/7 by Longmont fire personnel. When the weather forecast called for high winds on Tuesday, all fires were put out as dictated by the burn plan. However, today’s winds appear to have reignited a slash pile (small tree branches) and started the fire.
The fire is not fully contained, however there is a low threat of the fire spreading. There are 8 to 10 residents in the area and one has voluntary evacuated. No mandatory evacuations have been issued. There is no air support at this time due to high winds.
Firefighting command has transitioned from Boulder County over to the U.S Forest Service. Approximately 10 percent of the land is owned by the US Forest Service and the rest by the City of Longmont.
Fire personnel from several agencies will stay on site until all further threats are eliminated.
