Storm Causes Power Outages in Longmont; Shelter Open

 

OCTOBER 26, 2011 - Wednesday's snow storm is moving out of town but its impact is being felt throughout the City of Longmont.

The storm has caused numerous power outages in scattered areas throughout the city. As of 3:30 pm MST, Longmont Power and Communications (LPC) has restored power to the City’s main distribution lines, but an estimated 700 customers continue to be without electricity. Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) expects that many people will be without power throughout the evening.

Those without power and heat can report the the St. Vrain Memorial Building located at 700 Longs Peak Ave. for temporary shelter. It is expected that the Memorial Building will stay open all night and into Thursday morning. The Red Cross is helping staff the shelter. It is recommended that peoplecoming to the shelter bring personal toiletry items such as towels, soap, and general bath supplies.

For more information, a hotline number for sheltering information has been established at 303-651-8595. Spanish speakers also are available.

Other relevant information for Longmont residents:

• The City of Longmont opened its Emergency Operations Center and is monitoring the storm and its impact on roads and electrical power.
• Individuals who rely on life sustaining systems like oxygen or home dialysis and are without electrical power should consider making other arrangements for power. They should call a neighbor or their doctor for advice. Or they can call the information hotline number at 303-651-8595.
• To report damaged or downed trees in public areas like streets residents are asked to call 303-651-8468; to report power outages or downed trees on power lines call 303-776-0011 or fill out the online form at http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/WebReqForm.nsf/LPCContactForm?OpenForm. Longmont citizens are responsible for proper disposal of fallen tree limbs associated with their private trees. To ensure the streets remain safe, please do not pile branches in the streets or alleyways. Longmont residents may take their branches and limbs to the city tree limb diversion site located at 140 Martin Street. The facility will have extended hours, 8am - 6:30 pm,, 7 days a week until further notice. Residents must bring their latest utility bill reflecting the Waste Management Fee to access the site.
• Branches Longmont citizens are responsible for proper disposal of fallen tree limbs associated with their private trees. To ensure the streets remain safe, please do not pile branches in the streets or alleyways. Longmont residents may take their branches and tree limbs to the city's tree limb diversion site located at 140 Martin Street. The facility will have extended hours, 8am - 6:30 pm, and will be open seven days a week until further notice. Residents must bring their latest utility bill reflecting the Waste Management Fee to access the site.
• The city also is working to develop an approach to address the collection of limbs in areas of the city that have been heavily impacted by the storm. The city will communicate this collection plan as soon as it's complete.
• The regular Wednesday Alley Collections (October 26, 2011) were not possible due to low hanging wires and downed tree branches blocking the alleys. These alley collections will be collected on Friday, October 28. Please leave your containers on the proper side of the alley for collection on Friday.
• Customers without power are divided into isolated groups of between 1 – 20 customers per outage. Many of these are isolated to a single customer. Due to the high volume of small outages, each of which needs to be addressed individually, many households may be without power through the night. At this time, because there is no concentrated outage there is no way to provide a description for a single area of the outage.

• LPC Crews have been working to restore power since 11:30 pm last night, and will continue working throughout tonight and into tomorrow as required. See updates on the City of Longmont’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cityoflongmontco.
  If you are dependent on electricity to run your life support system, LPC urges you to think about alternatives - like staying with a friend, calling your doctor or making other arrangements.
• LPC also reminds all customers about staying safe during the storm. Please do not attempt to trim or remove trees that are, or could come in contact with, energized electric lines.
• If customers are concerned with pipes freezing inside the house they can let a faucet trickle so that the water will continue to move. They can also open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to reach the pipes on the outside walls.
• Approximately 50,000 accounts - including cell phones, e-mails and land lines - were sent an Everbridge notification message beginning at 3:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon alerting subscribers of power outages and shelter information.
• The Longmont Humane Society is open until 10 pm for animals needing shelter and food during the power outage.
