Sanitary Sewer Overflows, Blockages and Slow Drains
Fats, Oils and Greases stick to the inside of sewers. Eventually, the accumulation becomes a blockage and sewage "backs up" into homes, businesses or the street and storm sewers. Exposure to raw sewage is a health risk because of pathogens.
EXPENSIVE FOR THE CITY AND RESIDENTS

The City of Longmont's Utility Operations clean hundreds of miles of city sewer lines each year. However, some residential and restaurant areas have unusually high amounts of grease accumulation due to food preparation. The City has to clean these areas more often. Additionally, grease that makes its way down to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (over 3,000 pounds per day) is a maintenance nightmare.
The City only maintains the city sewers. What about private sewer lines? The grease accumulates there, too. This causes "slow drains", blockages and "back ups".

DON'T FEED THE SEWER MONSTER-
DON'T POUR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN!
.
- Never pour grease down the drain or toilet. Spent deep fryer oil can be recycled via Ecocycle's CHaRM Program for FREE (303-444-6634). Smaller amounts (like from fying pans) can be poured into a container, sealed and thrown into the trash.
- Scrape food wastes off of utensils, plates, pots and pans and into the trash before washing. Don't rely on garbage grinders to dispose of wastes to the sewer.
- Use baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps. Dump these into the trash.
