Stream Restoration Project

The location of the Wastewater Treatment Plant was once a landfill. The area of the river adjacent to and above the treatment plant was polluted with garbage and abandoned leaky vehicles. Additionally, the streambed and landscaping around the river was being destroyed by four-wheelers.

These pictures were taken in 2003.

The intent of this project was to remove the garbage, restore area to the natural state, stabilize the area from erosion, provide habitat and
improve the water quality of the St. Vrain River.

In March of 2004, the City's W-WW Department completed a Stream Restoration Project:

1. Debris was removed from 600 feet of river;
2. Streambed was re-shaped to recreate the original meandering pool. Boulder vein added;
2. 125 foot Boulder Toe Wall was constructed. The boulders are offset and offer additional cover;
3. Willows & cottonwoods were planted and root wads were added. These create habitats and control erosion. The trees will eventually provide shade to the river bed;
4. Storm water discharging above the restored area was rerouted to an inland detention pond. This further improves the water quality of the river by reducing sediment.
5. Signage was added to inform citizens of the restoration activities.

6. An additional 300 feet of existing riparian wetland downstream from the treatment plant discharge was restored by removing undesirable trees and replanting native cottonwoods and shrubs.
